In the same way as the original film, the stage adaptation follows the story of young Marty McFly, a curious boy, who travels in space and time to 1955 by the misuse of a time-traveling DeLorean. Because of its nature, time travel is not as simple as it seems, and Marty McFly must strive to guarantee that his mom and dad stay true to history's course for him to get back to his time period.

The show, Back To The Future, a stage play that was much-awaited, was thought of way back two decades ago, when the wife of one of the originators, Zemeckis, was said to be excited about the concept of expanding on the legacy of the original film. The musical was set to open in 2015, as an allusion to the follow-up film to the first movie (where the characters traveled forward in time to 2015), but the stage adaptation was delayed unintentionally and ultimately premiered at the Manchester Opera House, then subsequently transferred to London’s Adelphi Theater after the COVID outbreak.
The stage adaptation, besides a couple of trivial tweaks, still features the sci-fi narrative of Marty McFly as he gets transported through time to the year 1955, where he meets the younger versions of his friends and family. However, given the changeability of live performances, the adaptation was able to establish its own identity that greatly enhanced the musical. Both optically and audially, the vibrant show has impressive execution.
