When you’re a young and devout missionary-to-be, there is no telling where the Church will send you. This is the predicament of Elder Kevin Price, who’s hoping and praying intensively to be sent to Orlando, Florida, for his two-year mission. However, fate has other plans as he and his fellow Elder Arnold Cunnigham are sent to a town in Uganda, where the local warlord General Butt F*cking Naked is wreaking havoc. Upon their arrival, they were immediately robbed. But finally, they were welcomed by the village where people lived in harsh conditions. Determined to fulfill his mission, Price proceeds to convert the village elders.
Meanwhile, the warlord demands the genital mutilation of female villagers. It doesn’t help Price’s situation that Cunnigham’s teachings combine the Book of Mormon, some science fiction, and fantasy. Will Price succeed at his mission? Or will he fail to liberate the villagers? Catch this remarkable musical at the Providence Performing Arts Center to find out!
The Book of Mormon features an incredibly unique storyline by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone. This trio is also responsible for the musical’s highly-rated music and lyrics. The musical is about an earnest young missionary who tackles complex issues in his mission, including HIV/AIDS, female genital mutilation, famine, and oppression. Premiering on Broadway in 2011, the musical was led by a fantastic creative team. The direction was led by Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker while Nicholaw spearheaded the choreography. The production also pulled out all the stops by bringing in the best in the circuit, such as scenic designer Scott Pask, costume designer Ann Roth, lighting designer Brian MacDevitt, and sound designer Brian Ronan.
After its premiere on Broadway, the musical received numerous accolades, including winning nine Tony Awards out of 14 nominations. The musical became the big winner at the 65th Tony Awards in 2011 after The Book of Mormon won Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Choreography. The creative team also brought home some awards after winning Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Orchestrations, and Best Sound Design. Over at the Drama Desk Awards, The Book of Mormon won five out of 12 nominations, including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Music and Lyrics. Aside from awards, The Book of Mormon also received countless rave reviews from professional critics. Variety gave the Broadway production a perfect ten. “This raucously funny new show surpasses both of those Tony winners, and handily so: Every song enhances the hilarity, expert staging heightens every gag, and the cast of fresh faces is blissfully good.”
Meanwhile, the New York Daily News praised the musical for the wide range of emotions it evokes from its viewers. “It’s a show where you catch yourself laughing one minute, mouth agape the next, eventually wiping away tears, and, finally, cheering.” The review then complimented the show makers for their incredible work, “Stone and Parker are famous for their take-no-prisoners, nothing-is-sacred approach to humor. And Lopez knows about thumbing his nose at contemporary conventions.”
Moreover, the Washington Post also gave the incredible musical a perfect score in their review, “The Book of Mormon” expresses a giddy contempt for that innocence, in one of the most joyously acidic bundles Broadway has unwrapped in years.”
